Cancer
Registry
Memorial Hospital's
Cancer Registry collects and analyzes data on patients who are diagnosed
and treated with cancer at Memorial Hospital. This data base provides
our physicians with information on the types of cancer occurring
in the Michiana area, the treatment given, and the patient outcome.
This allows our medical staff to assess the effectiveness of treatment
by comparison with State and National data.
More than 1,000
new patients are entered into the Registry each year. The most frequent
cancer diagnoses are breast, lung, prostate, colorectal, GYN, head-neck,
lymphomas, and urinary system. For example, in 2000 a total of 1,040
cases were entered, with new patient distribution as follows:
- Breast cancer
- 166
- Lung - 142
- Prostate - 74
- Colorectal -
103
- Head-Neck - 28
- Lymphomas - 30
- Urinary System
- 58
The Registry staff
also coordinate weekly tumor boards and cancer forums, where physicians
and allied health professionals provide consultation on individual
patient treatment.
Memorial Hospital's
Cancer Registry is maintained by a staff of three, including two
Certified Cancer Registrars (CTR). Registrar training includes medical
terminology, anatomy, disease processes, coding and abstracting
medical data, statistical analysis and reporting of data. Training
also addresses medical-legal issues, since confidentiality of patient
information is strictly observed.
